CHAPTER XX

The Scribe turned to Erin and smiled, although she didn’t feel like it. She could see the tears shining in her daughter’s eyes and knew she was to blame for them. She knew there was nothing she could do to change things. She could, however, reach out to let her know she had always had her love.

“I know it is too late for you to call me mother. My name is Alena.”

Erin rushed to share embraces with her mother as she declared. “ To me, you have always been my mother, nothing has changed. Father never let me believe that you didn’t love me. He explained everything, or as much as he knew. He didn’t tell me what you are and I never questioned the matter. All that mattered was that I knew you loved me. I got all my presents, every one, each year on the same day as I was born and each told me how much you cared. They were filled with your love. I could see how much father loved you. That never changed to the day he died. I want to introduce you to my daughter. Karia.”

“I think we have already met.” Alena softly laughed as she touched Karia’s face with a caring hand.

This, however, was not a time for family reunions and Alena had to return to the problem she had been sent to deal with. She looked at Fendor and frowned for a moment before repeating the gesture with the rest of the counsel.

“We will visit later.” Alena assured her family. “I have work to do that cannot wait.”

Erin and Karia nodded as they moved to stand on either side of her and Alena smiled at the picture she suspected they presented. They were the three most powerful beings in the room and when her girls spread their wings to compliment hers they glowed. The men said nothing. They had heard what she had said to her daughter and were waiting to hear what else she had to add. She began.

“The Tribunal has been recalled and the members are not happy with what they are seeing below. They are also not very pleased about having to deal with this when they would rather be resting. They have reviewed the actions of our people over the last five thousand years and have come up with changes. They have judged those who have participated in creating the problem we are now forced to deal with and have delivered a unanimous declaration. This is their judgment, listen to their words and accept your fate.”

“Accept our fate? You really think we will take your word on this without verification of authenticity?” Fendor scoffed.

Alena’s smile was equally mocking as she replied.

“You would question the word of a Scribe? Should I send word to one of the founders that you want to hear his verdict in person?”

The entire audience watched and waited in silence. No one rustled a feather in case they might miss a word and the tension grew thicker.
